How is Unifiedroot's infrastructure independent?
Unifiedroot has built an independent root server platform on the Internet that exists in parallel to ICANN. To enable Internet users to connect to both the ICANN and Unifiedroot root servers , Unifiedroot has developed a new web browser we call "Sundial ".
The Sundial browser recognizes all the TLDs we are familiar with now from ICANN as well as those registered at Unifiedroot.
How does Unifiedroot avoid conflict with ICANN?
Unifiedroot is careful not to cause conflict with ICANN or to jeopardize the security and stability of the DNS (Domain Name System). We will not register a domain name that already exists at ICANN or IANA. In addition, we inform ICANN of every TLD and IDN that is registered at Unifiedroot.
What are the technical details of the Unifiedroot platform?
-
Operating System
The root system platforms are running on SUN Solaris. SUN Solaris is the most used operating system for internet services and has an abundance of management tools and facilities for running a name server system. The operating system has been stripped down and optimized for security reasons and to handle high load of traffic. -
Name Server Software
The root is running on name server software BIND. BIND is authoritative name server software developed for TLD name serving. The BIND software is used by some very large TLD name servers for several countries. The BIND software has been modified to remove unnecessary functions for security purposes. Furthermore the software has been optimized to handle frequent updates. The purposes of root zone updates can be done without stopping the name server services and has been optimized to allow for fast reloads for updates. -
System Security
Every root server is protected by firewalls. Only ordinary name server requests and specific management access is provided through the firewall. All systems are monitored by both host and network based IDS systems. The resulting logs are consolidated for further detailed analysis at the network operation centre.
Are the TLDs and IDNs from ICANN included in the Whois database of Unifiedroot?
Yes. All ICANN TLDs and IDNs as well as the country codes controlled by IANA are included in the Whois database of Unifiedroot.
