An Internationalized Domain Name TLD is a top-level domain composed of non-Latin based characters. IDNs in the Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, and Hindi, languages would fall into this category. Examples might look like:
More than half the world's population does not use Latin characters in their native language. Introducing IDNs in local languages will make the Internet more accessible to billions of people worldwide who do not access the Internet because of language problems. It creates the possibility to advertise Internet addresses in languages and script types that these people can understand intuitively.
Any corporation, organization or institution can apply for an IDN, as long as the name is available, is not already registered at ICANN, and is not part of our restricted name list.
The minimum registration fee for an IDN at Unifiedroot is
EUR 50,000 with an annual renewal fee of EUR 12,500.
The price structure for exceptionally valuable IDNs will be negotiated on a case by case basis.
There is no direct link to the IDN application form. The first step in our application process is to perform a search at our "Availability Check " page to see if the IDN you are looking for is available.
If the IDN you are looking for is available you will see an orange button with the text "Click here to apply for (your IDN)". This link will take you to the application form. We strongly recommended that you first read through all sections of the website before starting the application process.
Unifiedroot is accepting applications for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). As Unifiedroot concludes assembling its governing board that will be responsible to refine and finalize our application, evaluation and approval policies we will be accepting new IDNs on a case-by-case basis.
Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese, Turkish and Hindi. Others will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
If you register an IDN with us, we offer you the possibility to create SLDs. An SLD may only consist of characters within the same alphabet that is used for the attached TLD (for example, an SLD under a Chinese IDN may only consist of Chinese characters and not of Latin or other characters).
No. Only characters listed in the IDN table (listing of character scripts in the language of the IDN) can be used.
No. To prevent confusion and the possibility of phishing attacks a mixture of scripts in a domain name is not allowed. Letters from different language scripts may look the same visually but to the computer they are different. Thus you could have two domain names that to the eye are the same but would actually link to two different websites.
Yes, an IDN registered at Unifiedroot may be sold and transferred providing the following conditions have been met:
To view IDNs registered at Unifiedroot users must first be able to query our root servers. Unifiedroot has ingeniously solved this problem. From the original source code of Mozilla's Firefox browser we have developed our own browser we call "Sundial ". The Sundial browser has been designed to seamlessly recognize all the IDNs we are familiar with now from ICANN as well as all the IDNs on the Unifiedroot root servers.
