Introduction to the root system
One of the tasks of UnifiedRoot is to operate a root system on the Internet. The document below gives an introduction to a root system and why it is so important to the correct operation of the Internet.
The naming structure of the Internet is built somewhat like the roots of an (old) tree. One main root at the top and with lots of smaller end points at the bottom. Each node along the root system that breaks into more paths we call a "domain", and the highest level of this is called the "top-level domain" (TLD). The next level down is the "second-level domain" (SLD), and so forth.
